Mr. Fukunaga is a successful entrepreneur and investor. As an investor he is heavily focused on real estate. As an entrepreneur he founded Funimation Entertainment in 1994 growing it to become the dominant market share leader in Anime in North America. As CEO, he produced, marketed and distributed over 600 titles such as Dragon Ball Z, Ghost in the Shell, Akira, Your Name, One Piece and Attack on Titan.
In 2005 Mr. Fukunaga sold Funimation for $100.4 million to Navarre Corporation. In 2011, Mr. Fukunaga led a management buy back of the company with his partners Darwin Deason, Doug Deason and John Kelbs. Continuing to grow the company in areas such as social media, SVOD streaming service, home video, merchandise and theatrical releases, Mr. Fukunaga then sold Funimation to Sony Pictures for $155.95 million in 2017.
Prior to founding Funimation, Mr. Fukunaga worked for Tandem Computers, Anderson Consulting (now Accenture) as a strategy consultant and computer designer for IBM.
Mr. Fukunaga earned a Bachelors and Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University and an MBA from Columbia University.
As an active real estate investor for many years, Mr. Fukunaga has invested in numerous individual properties as well as with private equity firms such as Blackstone and Starwood. In addition Mr. Fukunaga is a board member / advisor for several companies.
